Questions about software updates module
Hi!
I'm pushing out test updates with Software Spdater and fscs premium 11.
Updates seem to install nicely (java, office, acrobat etc). However, after installation the status of the update shown in Software Updates tab is "Updating installation status (timestamp)". I've never seen "update succesfull" text, so will that update line just disappear when the update is OK? How long will it approximately take? Is there a installation history page/tab to check out which installations has failed / succeeded ?
Also, workstations are not currently configured to notify users when installing updates. What would happen if user shut down his computer in the middle of the update (for example office 2010 sp2 ) ?
Also, when update fails with code "Could not install update", what would be the first troubleshooting steps or should I just try installing update again?

Couple of additional questions..
According to my testing, the batches are downloaded from microsoft, adobe, sun etc directly to workstations. Will neigbour cast work with software updates? Is it possible to determine packet size that will be downloaded?
Is there a "slow link detection" that laptops would not start downloading updates over a mobile connection?
I turned on option notifying users when installing updates, but it seems that the notification disappears soon after installation has started. Is there any way for users to know when NOT to boot/shutdown their computers? I simulated the workstation shutdown in the middle of the office 2010 sp2 insallation. The policy manager says status for installation "Starting installation (timestamp)", it's been over 12hours now - when will the status change? I have rebooted and rescanned the system, in the advanced settings I have set up
cancel hanging installation in = 1 hour
retry hanging installation = next time (what does next time actually mean btw?)
and lastly a request to add "scan for updates" to operations tab in anti-virus mode
Thanks in advance

Hello hyvokar,
I will answer some of your questions, for which i know the answer.
> I've never seen "update succesfull" text, so will that update line just disappear when the update is OK?
Yes.
> How long will it approximately take?
It depends on update installation time and Outgoing Packages Update Interval (default - 10 min). Also if the update installation requires reboot, then the final result willl be available only after all selected for current round updates are installed and the host is rebooted.
> Is there a installation history page/tab to check out which installations has failed / succeeded ?
There is no such info on PM side, this information is present on the client side only in SU policy statistics.
> What would happen if user shut down his computer in the middle of the update (for example office 2010 sp2 ) ?
I guess, the same as if the user shut down the computer during manual installation of this update. SU creates restore point before any installation round starts, so the user will have a possibility to restore the system.
> Also, when update fails with code "Could not install update", what would be the first troubleshooting steps or should I just try installing update again?
Yes, you can try to install the update again. If it fails, please communicate with our support.
> Will neigbour cast work with software updates?
No.
> Is it possible to determine packet size that will be downloaded?
Unfortunately, it's not possible in this release.
> Is there a "slow link detection" that laptops would not start downloading updates over a mobile connection?
No.
> Is there any way for users to know when NOT to boot/shutdown their computers?
All the SU notifications are visible in "Flyer history" window. Right click on F-Secure Icon and select "Show flyer history".
> when will the status change?
When you'll try to install this update once again.
>what does next time actually mean btw?
It means that the installation of hanged update will be repeated during next (nearest) installation round.
Best regards,
Vad
