Why .doc is included in manual scanning by default but .docx is not?

Hi all,

Does anyone know why the file extension ".doc" (indeed ".do?") is included as known file type for manual scanning in the default setup but .docx is not? I suppose their risk levels are similar. I was asked by a user and can't give a reasonable answer.

Hello All,

The list of included extensions is currently what we believe to be relevant. It's possible that we'll update the list when we release new service release.

However, the list of included extensions is channel updateable by us (relevant mostly for Real-Time Scanning). You can of course always scan all files with manual scanning if you think it's necessary. Files are anyway checked regardless of their extensions upon execution.

It appears that you need to add "DO?? XL?? PP??" to include the newer Office document formats. Personally. I have added these for my manual scan, but not for the real time scanning.

Scanning PST files is not really very useful, as F-Secure can't (at least couldn't the last time I checked) disinfect single mail object within the PST file. If you have enabled "Delete Automatically" as the infection action, F-Secure would delete the entire PST file. You probably don't want that. Smiley Surprised

I always thought that it searches for extensions starting with.doc (like .doc*) but I just tested and No, only .doc were scanned Smiley Embarassed

I assume this has to be a bug. I can't see any extensions with more than 3 characters(.xxx) in the known file type list and there are many office documents for example that has even 4 or 5 characters. I also don't see for example Outlook files in the list (.pst) so IMO it's not a great list of known file types.

Personally I always scan all file types and not only the known ones. Then you don't have to worry about it Smiley Wink
