Are there any settings that suspends scheduled full scan when on battery power as this drains laptop batteries much faster than normal.

There is no setting on laptop battery, but have you enabled this setting "Run scanning as low priority", and disabled "Scan inside compressed files (slower)" ?
These two should reduce system resources.
Yes I have, but it's unfortunately not enough.
