Is it always required to reboot a machine after an agent install?

Hello, is it always necessary to reboot a device after the agent installation? Or could the install complete successfully without needing to restart the device?

Also, what I understand from the docs is that it could require a restart as it could not, so when does the agent installation require and when not and why? (my question is for all the three OSes Windows/Linux/MacOS)

    Hi @yasser0x01

The necessity of rebooting a device after installing the WithSecure agent can vary depending on the operating system and specific circumstances.

    Windows

For Windows, a reboot is often required after the installation of the WithSecure agent, especially if there are critical updates or changes to system files. However, in some cases, the installation can complete successfully without a restart, particularly if no significant system modifications are needed.

    Linux

On Linux systems, a reboot is generally not required after installing the WithSecure agent. The installation process typically involves starting or restarting specific services rather than the entire system. However, if there are dependencies or kernel modules that need to be loaded, a restart might be necessary.

    MacOS

For macOS, the need for a reboot can depend on the version and the specific changes made during the installation. Generally, a reboot is recommended to ensure all components are properly initialized and any system modifications are fully applied. However, in some cases, the installation might complete without requiring a restart.

    When is a Restart Required?

    • Critical Updates: If the agent installation involves critical updates or changes to system files, a restart is usually necessary to apply these changes.
    • Kernel Modules: On Linux, if new kernel modules are installed, a reboot might be required to load them properly.
    • System Modifications: Any significant modifications to the operating system, such as changes to security settings or system services, may necessitate a restart.

When is a Restart Not Required?

    • Minor Updates: If the installation involves minor updates or changes that do not affect system files or services, a restart may not be necessary.
    • Service Restarts: On Linux, restarting specific services instead of the entire system can often suffice.

I hope this clarifies your questions! If you have any more queries or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
