How to verify if you are using the new Capricorn engine F-Secure has released a new generation engine for one of our core scanning engines, which, at F-Secure, we call Capricorn. The engine change brings significant improvements in the database size, decreasing it by nearly 75%. This has the benefit of reduced bandwidth usage, for example. In addition, the new engine consumes less IO/CPU, and is faster and lighter to upgrade.
The Capricorn engine release has two phases:
- Windows Ultralight-based products switched globally to use Capricorn engine on February 1, 2019, at 05:00 AM (EET). These products include:
- F-Secure Client Security 13.x and newer
- F-Secure SAFE and Internet Security 17.x and newer
- Non-ultralight and Linux products along with Server products switched to use Capricorn engine on February 5, at 07:15 AM (EET). These products include:
- F-Secure Client Security 12.x and older
- F-Secure SAFE and Internet Security 16.x. and older
- All Linux security products
- All server products
How to verify that the upgrade was successful?
Depending on your deployment model, there are two ways to verify a successful upgrade.
For product versions belonging to the 1st phase (Windows Ultralight-based products):
- If you are using F-Secure Policy Manager, check that the new engine called F-Secure Capricorn version
2019-02-01-0 or newer is downloaded, with (channel) identifiers capricorn-win32 and capricorn-win64. - In standalone products: In the system tray, right click the F-Secure icon. In the Updates tab, you should see: F-Secure Capricorn version
2019-02-01-00 or newer.
Note: This upgrade has introduced new update channels. This means that it is possible that the older channel identifiers (such as aquarius-win32, aquarius-win64) are still visible for approximately a week after the upgrade.
Note: It is possible that the Aquarius updates are still downloaded approximately for a week, and they are visible in the product's "Downloads" view with status "not installed". As long as the F-Secure Capricorn Updates are installed, this does not affect the product's protection capabilities nor functionality. The Aquarius updates will eventually disappear automatically.
For product versions belonging to the 2nd phase (non-Ultralight, Linux and Server products):
For the 2nd phase products, the upgrade was done as an in-channel migration due to feature differences in the products. This means that the engine name displayed in the product remains Aquarius. The Aquarius version number can be checked in order to verify that the upgrade was successful.
For F-Secure Business Suite products (Email and Server Security):
- Check F-Secure Policy Manager to see that the Capricorn update is being distributed. Capricorn is in use if the version is the same or newer than
2019-02-05_04: 
- In case you want to check whether individual hosts are using the Capricorn engine, check that Capricorn is in use and the version is the same or newer than
2019-02-05_04: 
- The engine version can be verified from the (Email and) Server Security Web GUI as well. Capricorn is in use if the version number is the same or newer than
2019-02-05_04. 
- Check that the Aquarius folder is about 100-102MB from the server. This indicates that the Capricorn engine is in use as the old Aquarius engine is larger, over 500MB.
